Game Report - Round 9 - Half Way!

Round Nine was the half-way point in the league.  The New Cows hosted Flaming Moe's and earned nine points from the encounter, which also saw Graeme and Colin having a great evening, with twenty individual points for Graeme for the first time this season.  The Offshore Overboards travelled all the way to the Old Dutch to meet the Dutch Dons, and the visitors took seven points.  Meanwhile, back at the Offshore, the Chip Shop Job hosted Silver Dollar's big guns, who took the Mickey Mouse to seal victory.  Another away team taking six points by means of the Mouse were Cat's Meow, visiting the Starlight Blues, whose Jay scored the sixth 180 of the season.  The HiTech Divers were visited by the Midnight Cowboys, and the home team won eight-two.

The first half ends very competitively, with the Divers just now starting to clear a little space between themselves and the others.  The two Offshore teams stand second and third, but face each other in the first round of the second half.  Starlight Blues and Cat's Meow are only one point adrift on ten each, and a further one point adrift are the New Cows and Silver Dollar.  Even the battle for the bottom is competitive!  With nine rounds still to go the table could see major changes in even a couple of rounds, and nothing looks even close to settled yet.

League Notices

There have been a few gripes and moans over the last few weeks, some of them justified.  Take heed therefore of the school-master style lecture that follows, but don't take anything personally because each point has been mentioned in reference to at least two players or teams, so there is no individual finger-pointing, more a general "word to the wise".  Captains please inform your teams.

Slow play:  Obviously, deliberate slow play is a no-no.  Some players however do have slower styles that others, and that really is up to the individual.  However, if slower players could at least recover their darts and clear the playing area as quick as possible then that would be appreciated, as many players do have early mornings at work to look forward to!

Scoring:  It has long been a matter of team pride as well as convention that home teams score.  Scoring must be achieved with a reasonable level of tempo and accuracy, and it would perhaps even be within reason for a visiting team to claim points by default if that tempo and accuracy are not present.  It is not acceptable for scorers to have to ask the players to add up their own totals, or to ask players to wait while a scoring backlog is calculated.  Visiting teams should not generally accept the disadvantage of scoring games, albeit that the odd game may be volunteered for by a spare player in a spirit of friendliness.  Obviously it can happen that teams are made up of players not comfortable at the scoreboard, and such teams in the past have always either had their venue provide a scorer or brought along a friend capable of doing the job.

Individual behaviour:  Most players generally remain fairly quiet and still while their opponent is playing as a sign of respect, so it can only be seen as disrespectful if other players do not do the same.  Sudden loud shouts as a player is about to throw, or deliberate movements in the thrower's line-of-sight are not acceptable.

Bars:  It is not in any way a fixed rule that bars provide food or snacks, but many thanks to those who do.  Some bars buy the odd round or offer discounts from their regular pricelist, and again, many thanks to them.  Some provide scorers, and that is appreciated by the home teams particularly.  However, as players, please don't gripe if you think you are not getting as much from one place as others offer: it just is not feasible for all venues to offer identical benefits.  One for the bars to note perhaps: it is beneficial for the bar if they can ensure that there are sufficient staff to take orders, although this has been mentioned as an area that could be improved, and players waiting to order probably hurts the bar's takings more than it hurts the player's throwing!
